DUI Crash Closed Maywood Avenue Hours Before Child Was Struck Nearby: Police

A DUI crash that snapped a telephone pole shut down Maywood Avenue for hours—just blocks from where a child was struck by a vehicle later that evening, authorities said.

The first crash occurred just after 2 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, when Malcolm Lee, 35, of Hackensack, was driving southbound on Maywood Avenue near Lenox Avenue in a 2006 Honda CR-V, Maywood Police Chief Terence Kenny said.

Lee sideswiped a telephone pole, then continued another 50 feet and struck a second pole, snapping it on impact, Kenny said. He was arrested for DWI and hospitalized with a significant injury, police said.

The crash forced a road closure until 1 p.m. while crews replaced the damaged pole, police said.

Just over four hours after the road reopened, a juvenile pedestrian was seriously injured in a crash on Maywood Avenue between Taplin Avenue and Thoma Avenue, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Deputy Chief of Detectives Jeff Angermeyer confirmed.

Officers responded at 5:34 p.m., and the child was transported to a local hospital, Angermeyer said.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, Angermeyer added.

The Bergen County Fatal Accident Investigation Unit Task Force was activated to assist in the joint investigation with Maywood Police, authorities said.
